The house
House 7 is a four-star hotel in Bida, and for most of its life it has been booked by phone, by WhatsApp, and by people walking in. That is not a shortcoming we are in a hurry to design away; it is why the front desk knows returning guests by name, and why the reserve flow on this site ends with a person calling you back rather than a payment screen.
The building is arranged the way compounds here are arranged: rooms facing inward, work happening in the middle, and a colonnade doing the job that a lobby does elsewhere. Most guests end up taking breakfast in the courtyard rather than the dining room, which was not planned but has been accepted.

What is in the rooms
Indigo cloth from the dyeing pits. Brass trays from the Wednesday market. Timber doors from a yard on the Minna road. None of it was bought as decoration, and none of it was bought from a supplier catalogue, which means the corridor changes slightly every year as things are replaced.
The one thing we will not do is treat any of it as a motif. There is no brass pattern on the bedspread and no woven texture behind the headings on this page. The objects are the point; a pattern derived from them would not be.
Culture is not decoration added after the fact.

The people
Thirty-one staff, most of them from Bida, several from the families whose workshops supply the house. The grounds are kept by two people who have been here longer than the current management. The kitchen runs from six.
If you want to see a workshop rather than buy from a stall, ask at the desk. Thursday mornings are usually free.
